Book 3 in the Peloponnese series

Following on from the first two acclaimed travel memoirs (Things Can Only Get Feta and Homer’s Where The Heart Is), Marjory, Jim and their crazy dog Wallace are on a second odyssey in the southern Peloponnese but this time they end up in a peninsula they didn’t choose, and a house they never thought they’d live in. How did this happen? Easy, this is Greece and nothing ever goes to plan.

The couple’s latest adventure in Koroni, on the Messinian peninsula, takes them on another perilous and funny journey, with house rental dramas, scorpion threats, a publishing upheaval, and much more. But when they are finally seduced by the charm of unspoilt Koroni, make new friends, grapple with Greek lessons, and reconnect with some of the memorable characters of their Mani days, they discover once more why they continue to be in love with this resilient country, despite its ongoing economic crisis. And there’s not even a sting in this tale. Well … almost!

REVIEWS

"This book is rare within the travel writing genre. It cleverly combines a travel narrative with enlightened observations about Greece, while retaining a light and entertaining touch throughout.” – Peter Kerr, best-selling author of Snowball Oranges

A Scorpion In The Lemon Tree Mad adventures on a Greek peninsula The Peloponnese Series Book 3 eBook Marjory McGinn

This is the third book about the author's Greek experiences, and they are all good. They are written with real feeling, are descriptive and entertaining. As well, the physical production of the books is very pleasing, they have beautiful covers, some interior illustrations, and are a nice size. Don't get the e-book, get the books!

I only have one complaint about the book. Perhaps to maintain suspense, the author is prone to give forboding hints, better expressed but of the "little did we know what was to come . . . " variety. Especially since their quirky dog Wallace is involved, this left me with anxiety about what disaster might happen and particularly if Wallace would be affected.

Wallace does have his illnesses and misadventures, but he recovers from all and has reached a ripe old age at the time of this third book. However it would have been far kinder of the author not to leave me wondering if something awful might happen to him, this detracted.

The author and her partner surely chose to live more remotely in the rural areas of Greece than many of us ever would (or in my case in the rural areas of ANYplace), and she's far more interested in Orthodox churches in such than I could ever muster up, but her writing about the varied people, animals and even plants and insects makes it all a fascinating journey. HIghly recommended.

McGinnis and her beau Jim provide the reader with well written excerpts of their time in outer Mani in the south of Peloponnese Greece. Wonderful scenery humorous and kind people including some traditions, crisis effects, Greek attitudes and personalities. So well written you are addicted to wanting to see and do for yourself. Gifted writing!
Another wonderful book by Margarita.I loved it. You feel like if you know all the characters in the book as well as she does, and if you love Greece as much as she does, you will really enjoy reading about all of her friends and experiencing all that she does in her year in Koroni.Of course,I loved her stories of Foteini once more, and also I would just love to meet and talk to Papa Theodoros, since I have always been intrigued with the orthodox church and its services over the many years that I have been visiting Greece. Congratulations Maragrita.Keep on writing about your Greek experiences.
Absolutely loved this book and probably the best so far in the trilogy. The trials and tribulations of living in Greece with all the characters in the local area made great reading. I am half Greek but have only holidayed there so reading about her first hand experiences actually residing in this crazy country was very informative (in case I ever get the urge). If you like biographical stories this won't disappoint. I look forward to the next one.
"A Scorpion in the Lemon Tree" is a worthy successor to Marjory McGinn's first two books describing one year each in the Mani section of the southern Peloponnese of Greece. This book describes a year's sojourn in Koroni, across the Messenian Gulf from the Mani, The cast of characters is of course different, but some of the previous characters do appear, such as Fotini, the charming Greek woman who was first seen riding her mule and last seen lending her mule to Marjory for a mad ride up and down the road. Although she meets many English ex-patriots in Koroni, some of whom recognize her as one of their favorite authors through her rather rare dog Wallace, a Jack Russell terrier, she also has many interactions with Greek people as well. A looming character in the background is the Greek financial crisis which is always showing its ugly face to the various people in the book including Marjory and her partner, Jim. They leave at the end of their year in Koroni partly because of this crisis. Their year on Koroni is full of good stories which Marjory tells in a very entertaining fashion. I enjoyed the book a great deal and look forward very much to her writings to come.
Further enlightenment about Greece and frolicking fun fill the pages of this superb finale to Marjory McGinn's trilogy! I gobbled up the first "Feta" and was hungry for more adventures and her reflections of life and times in the Mani. I felt the relaxation of being back home-sweet-home again when "Homer" touched my heart with the stories about the indomitable Greek spirit, still alive through these years of unrelenting austerity. When Scorpion was published, I snapped it up immediately - yet I couldn't help reading it more slowly to savor each new revelation - giggle with the myriad of intense surprises - and bask in the solemn occasions given respect. I didn't want to reach the ending! I wanted to prolong the experiences and the array of charismatic people met and their favored animals.Through her attention to details, inquisitive mind, wisdom, honesty and the ability to relate comic, tragic, and ultimately revealing experiences with her writing, a masterful description of Greek village life has been created. I will revisit these books. Brava Margarita!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all three books written by Marjorie McGill – and felt I had a rapport with her. Marjorie was raised in Australia and visited Greece when she was 20 and fell in love with it. I am an Australian and at that time ( when she was 20) I spent my honeymoon in Greece and also fell in love with the place. I married an American engineer who years later was sent to Greece on an assignment for a couple of years and I would visit him there during that time – and, like Marjorie , made friends and loved the place and the food. Marjorie writes beautifully and she made me feel that I had been transported back to Greece. I finished her book, “A Scorpion in the Lemon Tree “ early this morning –( to my dismay, I did not want it to come to an end). I was hoping that perhaps Jimbo would get romantic and pop the question and have Papa Theodoris marry them. The wedding celebration would have been huge with all the characters they had met in attendance...and of course Wallace too. I thought that would have been a great way to end the book, and would have me and everyone smiling. Well, perhaps something like that will happen in yet another sequel…
